India In the early 1600s, the British East India Company, led by King James I of England, sent a letter to the emperor Sir Thomas Roe, the Mogul emperor of Jahangir to try to establish trade between the two entities. At that time most of the countries wanted to trade with india which was considered the crown of all empires. What utk.edu says, is that the emperor who was wealthy was not interested in trading with England because he had everything he wanted. When the emperor received the letter from King James What happened is that when he received the card from King James he felt that trade was the right thing thing to do and thus began trading with england. By the 1720s the Mogul empire was collapsing because other european powers were fighting to take control of India. But before this, the East India Company established its own army in India. And after winning many battles such as the Battle of Plassey (what "history today" says) , in 1757, the British settled their dominance in India, and a “Anglo-Indian”society started was born. Although the British had settled viceroys and provincial governors, they still were under the rule of princes’ which were extremely wealthy. India's economy was largely based on tea and cotton which they exported to other countries. Britain took more Indian territory and converted it into land suitable for plantations. As a result Britain was able to control the Indian economy itself. During the 19th century in India Britain had laid almost 30,000 miles of railway tracks which then helped them raise their economy. Indian culture also changed gradually with British control over India. Britain ruled India with a caste system which was based on dictatorship and mercantilism. They used this system to take advantage of India. The British brought to india many new ideas for administration, medical skills and transport ideas. However, all this did not benefit the majority of Indians because the British thought themselves superior. The British finally took absolute control of india in 1858, alongside other nearby countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Celian iceland, and other minor islands. This period was called the British Raj. Because of this, India lost their governmental and economic system and was forced to become a monarchy ruled by the British and a Mercantilist country. This meant that the British were able to take any resource from india and the neighboring conquered territories paying a really low price for them. Calcutta was originally the capital city but in 1912 lead the charge to New Delhi. This is a clear example of New imperialism because the British imposed their language, traditions, ideology and other things, but not so radically because today india has its own religion and the monetary unit in that time was the Rupia, not Pound. The British also took resources from the Raj. The Raj finally became independent in 1947 separating the countries that used to form it. here is a video that explain a litle bit of the begining of the British India
